SHAH ALAM: The Selangor Information Technology and E-Commerce Council (SITEC) organised the fifth Startup Selangor sharing session entitled Team Building on the 21st of October, from 7:30pm to 9.30pm, at the Selangor Digital Creative Centre, i-City.

Tien-Yu Lee, Chief Business Development Officer of QSearch, and Yip Jia Sheng, Content Director of Zing Gadget, were invited to share their experiences on team building, management and development.

QSearch provides Facebook search and big data analytics to support social media marketing. They get the summary on trending topics and the keywords that Facebook fans are talking about and responding to. Thus, they provide clients the latest news to help them to make decisions.

QSearch became well-known in Taiwan after helping independent Taipei mayoral candidate Ko Wen-Je, who eventually won the election, to gather and analyze data.

Lee is a founding member of QSearch. He asserted that startup entrepreneurs need networks, experience and skills. In addition, they have to contribute lots of time, energy and passion. “For those who want to start a new business, I suggest you work for a new startup to observe and learn how the startup operates.”

Regarding the issue of selecting a team member, he noticed leaders often face a dilemma when they must choose between attitude or skills. Thus, he reminded participants to ask themselves: “Attitude VS skills. Which one is the most important criteria if you are thinking about hiring someone?”

Zing Gadget is a technological media specialising in technology news. It has successfully achieved one million visits by providing readers the latest information and diversified content.

Yip told attendees that Zing Gadget has three full-time employees and five part-time employees. They evaluate and solve problems through weekly meetings.

He tried to build up his team by organising sports days, tabletop games, presentations, debates, and gatherings.  The special thing is that he writes letters to all employees every month.

He argued that the employees’ growth and development would help companies grow and increase profit. He also encouraged his staff to try new things, and accepted their failures. “If they fail, then they should evaluate and review problems; If they succeed, then I will reward them, and encourage them to try more things.”
